  1. Hi Pierre, What a wonderful account of the experience of a young Canadian sailor. My uncle, John Fairchild, also enlisted in the navy as a teenager and was on the HMCS Athabaskan and when it was sunk was picked up by the Germans and spent a good deal of the war in a prisoner-of-war camp. I also had an uncle, William Murphy, who served in corvettes on convoy duty. With so many of these people gone now, it is so important that we are recording their history in pieces like this.

    1. On another note…
      Would you believe the son of a Chief Petty Officer who worked in the engine room of HMCS Athabascan along with my wife’s uncle just called me?
      He was also rescued along with my wife’s uncle…
