I had received this comment on my blog Souvenirs de guerre…
Someone had written this comment:
My father, who survived the sinking of HCMS Louisbourg in the Mediterrean in 1943, did not have very happy memories of the contemptuous and injust way Quebec sailors were treated on their ships and even after the war.
My father sustained an injury to his backbone, and his lungs were affected by toxic fumes caused by the fire on board the ship. This French-Canadian who was decorated never received a war veteran pension and we had to live in poverty until we settled in Sept-Îles during the industrial and housing boom of the town.
My father was even sent to the brig in Gibraltar because he defended himself against a Canadian who was constantly insulting him and other francophone crew members!!!
My father died in 1973.
This person never wrote back.
I went on sailing on Google and found a lot of pictures.
Here are a few…
HCMS Louisburg…
This how it was called, HMCS Louisburg and not Louisbourg.
Here is a painting I also caught in a net on the Net…
This is a list of sailors who died.

ERNIE PAIN CORNWALL ONTARIO
THANK YOU.
Hi Uncle Ernie, I’m thrilled to learn you are so connected on the web. Hopefully you still connect to this site in 2015. As you know, I’ve always been interested in WW1 & WW2 history, especially when it involves my family….and you are my family. I have researched many articles on the HCMS Louisburg and I am proud to say to my friends that you were one of the few survivours in this attack.
Visiting my Dad next week – Aug 24-5. Give us a call in MTL if you get the chance.
Doug Easson
I don’t know if uncle is still reading this blog Doug.

Is Ernie still alive then? I would like to talk to him about his time on the Louisburg. To my knowledge there are no others still around.

About Ernie Pain…
http://legionmagazine.com/en/index.php/2010/01/scrappy-little-corvettes-navy-part-37/
A book written by survivor John Quinsey titled HMCS Louisburg (1st) 1941-1943 is extremely detailed with pictures of shipmates names etc.
John Quinsey passed away two years ago. The book is so detailed that he mentioned a Christmas dinner that Ernie Pain was given a couple of beers as a gift by their host in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. John was wounded and after his recovery returned to active duty serving on the HMCS Montreal K319.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
Kevin, do you know where I can find a copy of this book. There are none available on line that I can find.
Garry
My uncle, James Hall, died on the Louisburg. Where can I get a copy of this book? ? Thanks for any assistance!
I have read some comments made on that post and the book seems to be unavailable…
My name is Ian D. MacDonald. My Uncle was Leading Seaman Donald M. MacDonald, who survived the sinking of the H.M.C.S. Louisburg, but later died on Feb. 8th 1943, from injuries. My mother, sister, and I met with O/S William Quinsey, and his family before his passing, as my uncle had saved Mr. Quinsey from drowning. My uncle Donnie was an avid swimmer. I have a copy of the book as my mother bought several copies to pass on to family members. I’m not sure if she has any left but I will inquire.
Respectfully submitted,
I.D. MacDonald.
Nov 11, 2017.
I have his record of service if you are interested.

Survivor of HMCS Louisburg Sinking
Telegraphist Keith Crone, R.C.N.V.R., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Crone, 463 Stadacona Street East, one of the surviving members of the crew of the ill-fated corvette H.M.C.S. Louisburg, is a native son of Moose Jaw.
He attended Prince Arthur Public School and the Central Collegiate Institute. Joining the Canadian Navy in January 1942, before he was 20 years of age, he trained at Regina and later at St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, where he was the leading student.
Telegraphist Crone went to sea in August last (1942) when he left Canada in one of the ships of the Royal Navy and proceeded to England, later being posted to the corvette Louisburg.
Some years ago he played hockey with the Junior Canucks and while living in Moose Jaw, was active in you people’s activities at Grace United Church.
In addition to his parents, he has two brothers, Dan and Arnold, and one sister, Miss Lucy Crone, all living in Moose Jaw.

My great uncle Roland Stevenson was a casualty of the Louisburg sinking. (you have him listed as JCR). Beautiful page, thank you for this page and the photos.
I write this blog so people can find their relatives who served their country during WWII. Everytime someone shares something I post it on my blogs…
Yes I have several blogs paying homage to servicemen and servicewomen.
My dad was a survivor of the HMCS Louisburg (Fred Brewer) and I would like to get a copy of William John Quincy book if possible. Each year I pay tribute to the HMCS Louisburg by posting events on my FB Page.
Thank You
Keith Brewer
I can’t help you find the book, but I can pay tribute to your father on the blog.
My cousin E. Bettess (Teddy) went down with the Louisburg. I was wondering if there are any survivors out there that would remember him? I am not sure of his ‘rating’, and branch. Would appreciate to hear from you.
Thank you

My name is Stephen Jarvis and I am the Grandson of Robert Jarvis who was the senior surviving officer of the Louisburg. I had the pleasure of meeting John Quinsey several years ago and obtaining a copy of his book, which is a good read. He did an excellent job. I have since been in receipt of some documentation from Library and Archives Canada, including the report filed by Lieutenant Jarvis. I will gladly share any of these documents as they were sent electronically.

I will contact you personally tomorrow afternoon.
